Federico’s research interests include the constitutive/numerical modelling of geomaterials, soil dynamics, and cyclic soil-structure interaction, with emphasis on geo-research for offshore renewables. Most recent applications relate to the study of offshore wind turbine foundations, such as large-diameter monopiles, particularly with regard to (i) response to cyclic/dynamic loads induced by wind, waves, and earthquakes, (ii) optimisation of silent offshore installation methods, and (iii) development of simplified engineering methods for foundation design.
Federico carries out multi-disciplinary research by combining his numerical modelling expertise with experimental work carried out in cooperation with experimental specialists, in order to develop sound and credible solutions for offshore geotechnical applications. He plays a prominent scientific role within the Dutch R&D consortium GROW for offshore wind research, e.g., in relation to major joint industry projects such as MIDAS, GDP, and SIMOX.
