I am interested in the functional ramifications of inter-and-intraspecific root system diversity in the context of soil dynamics. The root system decomposes into more elemental phenes under individual genetic control and with different utilities dependent on different soil resources. Phenes may be architectural, morphological, physiological, behavioral, affect explorative or exploitative foraging, and influence metabolism or not. Root phene integration determines overall acquisition efficiency.
