Liliana R Pires

Liliana graduated in Biochemistry at the University of Coimbra in 2003. After a short period working with inorganic chemistry at the University of Aveiro, Liliana enrolled in a master’s degree in biomedical engineering (University of Aveiro). The experimental work was performed at INEB, Porto (Portugal) under the supervision of Ana Paula Pêgo on the development of safe and efficient chitosan-based gene carriers for the specific delivery of genes to the peripheral nervous system. After finishing her M.Sc (2007), Liliana proceeded to a Ph.D in Biomedical Engineering (University of Porto), working on the development of scaffolds that support and promote regeneration after lesion in the spinal cord (2014). Part of the work was developed at Professor Luigi Ambrosio lab (Naples, Italy). In 2015 Liliana joined INL under the framework of the COFUND Marie Curie European program to work on the development of microneedles for drug delivery. In 2020, Liliana embraced a new challenge when starting to work as senior scientist at RUBYnanomed, the first INL spin-off, bringing a microfluidic device for liquid biopsy to the market.
