His research focuses on finding new molecular tools for the diagnosis and treatment of lung cancer. Is author of 206 articles in his specialty, he has directed 22 doctoral theses and has given numerous national and international conferences and seminars. Of note, in 2020 he addressed one of the 5 talks of the closing plenary session of the World Congress of Lung cancer, celebrated virtually from Singapore. Dr. Montuenga has been IP in numerous competitive regional, national, and international projects, as well as in collaborations with companies. He has been a member of the European Early Lung Cancer Research Group (EU-ELCG) and partner of the CURELUNG European Consortium for lung cancer genomics and epigenomics. The two consortia funded by the EU. In 2021, he has been incorporated as a member of the INTEGRAL consortium, a U19 NIH funded international collaborative research group to study biomarkers in the context of lung cancer early detection. He has registered six patents, one of which has been licensed to a Spanish biotechnology company. He has been part of numerous evaluation committees, public and private, national and international. He is part of the Executive Committee and coordinator of the Respiratory Cancer Program of the Research Network in Oncology (CIBERONC) of the Carlos III National Health Institute. He is a member of the Committee of Staging and Prognostic Factors of the International Society for the Study of Cancer Lung (IASLC) and Associate Editor of its journal, the Journal of Thoracic Oncology and other 5 cancer journals. Along of his teaching career, he has taught undergraduate and graduate subjects in the field of Cell Biology, Molecular Oncology, Biomedical Research Methodology, Developmental Biology, Histology and in the Core-Curriculum of interdisciplinary studies.
