From 1994 to 1996 he was President of the Basilicata Section of the Italian Chemical Society. From 1997 to 1999 he was member of the board of directors of the Interdivisional Section on Photochemistry of the Italian Chemical Society. He is member of the Italian Chemical Society, American Chemical Society, American Society of Photobiology, and European Photochemical Association. He is member of the Editorial Board of Internet Journal of Science and Arkivoc. He is Editor in chief of EPA Newsletter, the magazine of the European Photochemistry Association. He was member of the scientific or organizing committee of some meetings (i.e. the Second National Congress of Photochemistry and Photobiology and the V National Congress "Giornate di Chimica delle Sostanze Naturali"). His meaning scientific interests refer to the study of the chemical and photochemical reactivity of heterocyclic compounds. The behaviour of furan derivatives has been studied both in hydrolytic and oxidative conditions. The photochemical behaviour of some aromatic pentaatomic heterocyclic compounds has been studied towards both photosubstitutions (these reactions have been used in the synthesis of naturally occurring compounds with biological activity as photosensitizers of singlet oxygen) and isomerizations. Some years ago Prof. D'Auria started to study the photochemical degradation of some naturally occurring compounds and not. In particular, the photochemical behaviour of model compounds of lignin and of lignin itself has been studied in the presence of photochemically generated singlet oxygen. Furthermore, the photochemical degradation of some diphenylether herbicides has been studied. He is author of more than 200 articles on international journals and of numerous patents. His H-index, at the date of 21.12.2012, is 26.
