He is a clinical and translational researcher who has conducted pioneering research in lung cancer and lymphoma, with expertise in PET imaging, biomarkers and radiation and cancer immunity.
He is a Professor in the Sir Peter MacCallum Department of Oncology at the University of Melbourne and has more than 200 publications (H-index 55 with >11400 citations).
Research interests include management of haematological malignancies, bone marrow function and imaging, molecular imaging in lung cancer and haematological cancers, radiation therapy planning and target volume creation, chemoradiation in lung cancer, low grade lymphomas, hypoxia, metastasis, circulating tumour biomarkers and imaging of molecular targets of immunotherapy.
He chaired the groundbreaking TROG 99.03/ALLG follicular lymphoma randomised trial showing that immunotherapy added to radiotherapy greatly improves outcomes in early-stage follicular lymphoma. He chaired TROG 05.02/ALLG phase II MZL trial and with Dr Fiona-Hegi Johnson co-leads the ImmunopET trial of PD-L1 pet imaging in non-small cell lung cancer. International roles include membership of the Lancet Oncology commission on research in LMICs, work with the IAEA on the role of PET scanning and chair of the ILROG registry of early-stage follicular lymphoma.
