Bio
Dr. Samit Chatterjee is a young accomplished researcher and an avid educationist who is committed to pursue research and academic excellence. He has outstanding track record of basic and translational research as evidenced by 28 highly cited research articles published in high impact international journals and an US patent. He strives to perform novel research as well as to inspire students to develop analytical and innovative intellectual thinking that is essential to meet scientific challenges.
Dr. Chatterjee completed his M.Sc. in 2007 from Banaras Hindu University, obtained CSIR Junior Research Fellowship in 2007 and then completed Ph.D. in 2012 from Jawaharlal Nehru University (International Centre for Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology). His doctoral research work in host immunomodulation, identified the immunological basis of why BCG is not fully effective as a tuberculosis vaccine. His findings indicated that, in addition to BCG induced Th1 cells, ESAT-6 induced Th17 cells play a critical role in providing optimal vaccine efficacy against tuberculosis. These findings led to several peer reviewed publications in reputed international journals which attest to his hard work, intellectual insight and analytical skill.
Dr. Samit Chatterjee joined the Johns Hopkins University as a postdoctoral fellow in 2012 and continued to produce original research in the field of immuno-oncology. Subsequently, he attained expertise in targeted therapy of cancers and molecular imaging of immune check point. He played a vital role in the development and assessment of theranostic agents, leading to seminal discoveries on noninvasive imaging of immune checkpoint ligand PD-L1, as evidenced by multiple first authored papers. Furthermore, the immune check point imaging agent developed by him, has been patented and currently in clinical research use – which are true testimonies of Dr. Chatterjee’s contribution to research. Utilizing skills in advanced flow cytometry and tissue culture, Dr. Chatterjee also generated a novel recombinant cell line, with human PD-L1 overexpression, which is being utilized as an excellent model system to test and improve immune check point imaging agents and therapeutic drugs.
After successful completion of 5 years postdoctoral research, Dr Chatterjee joined the Department of Zoology, University of Rajasthan, Jaipur as an Assistant Professor in 2018. Dr. Chatterjee proved himself to be a capable mentor and teacher possessing international standard modern pedagogical techniques. His collaborative teamwork with other researchers has led to numerous discoveries in a variety of fields, including image analysis of lung cancer and role of mesenchymal stem cells in malaria. Dr. Chatterjee developed new image analysis technique to calculate lung tumor burden in animal model and devised new method using ImageJ platform for automated quantification of histochemical staining, thus actively contributing towards collaborative research.
