Thomas L. Higgins

Thomas L. Higgins, MD, MBA, MACP, FAAPL, MCCM, is Chief Medical Officer at the Center for Case Management (CfCM) in Massachusetts, and Professor of Medicine and Anesthesiology at the University of Massachusetts Medical School-Baystate. Dr. Higgins is certified by the American Board of Internal Medicine, the American Board of Anesthesiology, with a Certificate of Special Qualification in Critical Care Medicine. Dr. Higgins graduated from Boston University and trained in Internal Medicine at the Cleveland Clinic. After serving in the United States Public Health Service, he continued training in Anesthesia and Critical Care at the Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston. For eight years, he ran the Cardiothoracic Intensive Care Unit at the Cleveland Clinic, where he developed a cardiothoracic outcomes database, created risk-stratification scoring systems, and helped launch “fast-track” recovery from cardiac surgery. For fourteen years, he was chief of the Critical Care Division at Baystate Medical Center in Springfield, Massachusetts where he inaugurated the Critical Care Fellowship programs and championed EMR implementation. He has served on the Baystate Medical Practices Board of Directors and numerous hospital committees (Critical Care Practice, Pharmacy and Therapeutics, Medical Staff Health, Intellectual Property and Graduate Medical Education). As a physician executive within Baystate Health, he served as vice-chair of Medicine, Medical Director of Inpatient Informatics, Medical Director of Case Management, interim Chair of Medicine at Baystate, Chief Medical Officer at both Baystate Franklin Medical Center and Baystate Noble Hospital, and was interim President and CEO at Baystate Franklin in 2015-16. Dr. Higgins is actively involved in post-graduate education, conducts critical care research, has published two textbooks of critical care, three history books, and more than 130 peer-reviewed publications, including the widely-used Mortality Probability Model (MPM0-III) for critical care benchmarking. Tom recently returned to Baystate as interim Chief of Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine, while maintaining his work with CfCM (www.cfcm.com) and diagnostic testing startup BioSynchronicity (www.biosynchronicity.com)
