In my first project, I examined the forces and velocity field within model mangrove forests using 1/12th scale model trees that were geometrically similar to the mangrove Rhizophora. The study characterized the drag forces on individual trees and the velocity distribution with both random and in-line tree distributions, and with forests over a range of tree density between 2 to 18 trees/m2, which corresponded to 140 to 1200 trees/ha at field scale. I am also working on the effect of floating aquatic vegetation on the velocity field and mass removal. Finally, I have begun a new project to measure sediment transport inside regions of model vegetation considering random distributions of vegetation with different degrees of clustering.
