PRACTICAL APPLICATIONS OF MEDICAL GENETICS AND GENOMICS FOR PSYCHIATRISTS

This talk will focus on the importance of medical genetic evaluation in patients with psychiatric disease. It will first highlight the difference between complex inheritance and single gene disorders, and then summarize the referral criteria of our medical neuropsychiatric genetics clinic. Specific examples will be given of genetic conditions which can present with psychiatric symptoms, along with an overview of the genetic evaluation approach and standard diagnostic tests.
