Professor Michael Kamm leads a team of clinicians and scientists conducting broadly based research which ranges from basic science, through translational to clinical. Clinical programs in gastro intestinal research are undertaken in parallel with laboratory-based research, which aims to improve treatments and elucidate the pathogenesis of gut disorders. The group partners with local, national and international collaborators in healthcare, science and industry. The main research streams are in Inflammatory Bowel Diseases (Crohn’s disease and Ulcerative Colitis) and functional gastro intestinal disorders.

Gastrointestinal disorders affect at least one quarter of the Australian population, at all ages throughout life. These disorders include benign conditions such as defects affecting the gut in the newborn, childbirth pelvic floor damage, heartburn, abdominal pain, constipation, and incontinence. Other less benign conditions cause gut damage and can be life threatening, such as the inflammatory conditions Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis (Inflammatory Bowel Disease or IBD), and gastrointestinal cancer. Lead by Professor Michael Kamm, the Kamm Research Group conducts studies spanning the pathogenesis and treatment of IBD and its complications, to the multidisciplinary treatment of functional gut disorders.
